Forklift Winch - A winch is a mechanical tool that specializes in winding out or pulling in or winding up or letting out the tension of a wire cable, cable, wire rope or a rope. It its most simple form it is constructed of a spool together with a connected hand crank. More complex winches are found at the heart of machinery like for example steam shovels, tow trucks and elevators. Every now and then the spool could be referred to as the winch drum. Elaborate designs have gear assemblies that can be powered by hydraulic, electric, pneumatic or internal combustion drives. Various winches can comprise a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a ratchet and pawl device in order to stop it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Generally, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar piece of equipment called a capstan that does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the handle of the winch with one hand while tailing the other in order to maintain tension on the turns. Several winches have a cleat or stripper to maintain tension. These designs are called "self-tailing" winches.
Normally, winches are utilized offstage as part of the mechanism to be able to arrange backdrop in large theatrical productions. A lot of times the winches are actually embedded in the stage floor and utilized in order to transfer big set pieces off and on stage.
Lately, winches have been made in certain designs for water and snow sports. This new generation of winches is designed in order to pull riders rapidly across a body of water or of snow. This could stimulate a riding experience which is usually supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
